About Us
Four Pillars of Our Identity
These convictions have shaped Bethany from the beginning. They are not labels we wear lightly — they are commitments rooted in Scripture.
Reformed
We stand in the tradition of the Protestant Reformation. We believe salvation is entirely of God — by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, to the glory of God alone. Our theology is shaped by Scripture and expressed in the great confessions of the Reformed faith, including the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith. We hold to the doctrines of grace not as points of pride, but because we believe they give God all the glory he is due and give the sinner all the comfort they need.
Baptistic
We believe that baptism is an ordinance for those who have personally trusted in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. Baptism by immersion is the outward sign of an inward work — a public declaration of death to sin and new life in Christ. We do not baptise infants, not because we undervalue covenant promises, but because we believe Scripture reserves this sign for those who confess faith. The church, in our view, is a gathered community of regenerate believers, each one able to give account of God's saving work in their lives.
Non-Charismatic
We believe that the miraculous sign gifts described in the New Testament — including tongues, prophecy, and healing — were given by God for a specific foundational purpose and ceased with the completion of the apostolic age and the close of the biblical canon. The Spirit of God is fully present and powerfully at work today — convicting, regenerating, sanctifying, and assuring — but his work today is inseparably tied to the written Word of God. We do not seek new revelation; we seek to hear God speak through the Scripture he has already given.
Non-Ecumenical
We love Christians from many different traditions, and we seek to live at peace with all. But genuine Christian unity must be built on truth, not set aside for the sake of it. We do not pursue formal organisational unity with bodies that deny or compromise the essential doctrines of the gospel — including the authority of Scripture, justification by faith alone, and the sufficiency of Christ's atonement. We are happy to co-operate with others wherever the gospel is truly shared, but we will not pretend that deep doctrinal differences do not exist.
A Brief History of Bethany
Bethany Evangelical Church has its roots in a desire to plant a gospel-centred, Reformed Baptist witness in Pennington and the wider Leigh area of Greater Manchester.
The church was established in 1908 as an outreach work from Kingsleigh Methodist church in nearby Leigh, by a small group of believers who shared a common vision: a congregation that would be unashamedly biblical, warmly evangelical, and non-conformist in its outlook. From modest beginnings — a handful of people meeting to study Scripture and pray — Bethany has grown into an established congregation committed to making disciples in Leigh and beyond.
From the outset, expository preaching has been central to the life of Bethany. The conviction that the Word of God is sufficient — that the faithful, systematic exposition of Scripture is the primary means by which God transforms his people — has never wavered. Sunday by Sunday, the Bible is opened and preached in its fullness, not as a collection of helpful life tips, but as the living Word of the living God.

Over the years, the congregation has been shaped by a rich mixture of backgrounds. Students, working families, long-time residents, and those new to the area have all found a home at Bethany. The church has sought to be a place of welcome without compromise — a community where the gospel is proclaimed with clarity, and where all who come in repentance and faith are received with warmth.
Bethany continues to look outward. We are prayerfully committed to evangelism and to the support of gospel work both locally and further afield. Our Tuesday evening prayer and Bible study meeting reflects our conviction that the church is built not by human programmes, but by the Spirit of God, through his Word, in answer to prayer.
